Ice dams can cause serious problems for homeowners. While there are a lot of home maintenance tasks you may be tempted to do yourself, ice dam removal shouldn’t be one of them.

Why steam removal is best
Highmark has dealt with thousands of ice dams and removes them using only high-pressure steam equipment designed specifically for this purpose. Other methods are not recommended; chopping ice away can easily damage roofing, and chemicals designed to melt ice may impact the integrity of your roof, corrode metal flashing or gutters and harm plants and soils around your home’s foundation. Always rely on an accredited, insured professional for snow and ice removal.
Roof inspections are important—and always free.
If you’ve had ice dams in the past, call Highmark for a free roof and attic inspection. Our experienced teams can determine if and where heat is escaping from your home’s living spaces into the attic or crawlspace, and take necessary steps to minimize this heat transfer.
A roof inspection can also reveal damages to roofing materials from past events. Maintaining the integrity of your roof is extremely important in protecting your investment in your home.
