Be ready for 2012.

If this winter is anything like last winter, ice dams will lead the evening news while homeowners throw salt-filled socks on their roofs and trade water damage horror stories.

Those who had ice dams removed last year may be surprised to see them during another snowy winter. That’s not unusual. In fact, it’s the same dam thing every year. Unless you’ve taken steps inside your home to prevent heat from entering your attic, you’ll be prone to having them again under the same conditions.

Ice dams are caused when a warm attic melts snow on the roof above; the melting snow runs down toward the gutters and lower eaves where the roof is colder and refreezes, forming the ‘dam.’ Snowmelt above the dam can pool and leak into the house, causing significant damage.

Ice dam removal is tricky and best left to a professional. Never try to chip away ice with a pick-axe or other implement, as it can damage shingles. If you see or suspect ice dams, act sooner rather than later to minimize potential damage. Highmark has dealt with thousands of ice dams and uses only steam to remove them.
